The script is a mess, including older and younger versions of the characters for no real purpose. It is also undeniable that the movie would have only been marginally better with a more skilled actor playing Styles' Tom. It is undeniable the movie would have been better with a more skilled actor imbuing the character with more anything. The audience is left watching a blank slate move between emotional outbursts. He doesn't yet know how to use small actions, vocal inflection, uncomfortable silences, or anything else more practiced actors use to externalize the character's internal state. His skills are completely undeveloped to carry a film like this, and many scenes feel bewildering as a result of the choices (or lack of choices) he makes as an actor. All the early criticisms of his performance are completely deserved.
